Lab Notes: Experiment 1 – Journal Writing

And we are off…

As you will hear in the inaugural podcast (or assumed from the last post), we have started our experiment!  The first “treatment” that was chosen through a completely random selection by our children (we have three of those), was JOURNALING. The instructions were simply, “write” in a journal everyday.  And by write, he could write, type, talk to text; it didn’t matter as long as he was getting something down every day.  We set out for 1 month of journaling prior to the “results”, however in my research.  I discovered that much less time was needed for change, so we revised to 14 days.

Barnes decided to complete this experiment with a physical notebook and pen, which surprised me because he is such a tech junkie, I was sure that he would research and find the latest greatest app for this purpose.

From my perspective, the project started of as a homework assignment that had to be completed. I even found the journal rejected on the floor one day in the first week.

Yet Barnes stuck to it and journaled consistently in the evenings.

But then I noticed that as he continued to journal, he got a bit more technical and perhaps analytical (as he does).  I noticed that he started referencing his phone while journaling. I cannot wait to hear what that is all about.
